Dear Amy,

The problem occurs when your perfectionism gets in the way. I, however, do not suffer from that affliction. I know something you might not. Every first draft of everything is shit. Writing is rewriting. Always. On everything. Even my letters to you are rewritten. Besides, perfectionism is so overrated — I mean, seriously, what exactly (name one thing!) is it good for? When god created the earth & everything on it, he said, “It is good.” Not “It is perfect.” And that’s from a creator of the world! We cannot even create a worm!

So take a cue from me, or someone higher on the food chain if you wish, & forget being perfect. First, write generally, then, let your editor out of the basement/cage/exile — wherever you had to send her to just to shut her the hell up & let her go to town (just like you promised her you would).
