Dear Bonnie,

When I first hear Leonard Cohen’s early stuff, I kept saying, “No, seriously, who’s singing this?” But later on, when his voice got deeper “then Marianna’s Ditch,” he became one of my gods. And then the song “Nevermind” which you can’t really dance to, but it never fails to make me cry. His final album, that one is a true tearjerker for me. “You Want it Darker” breaks my heart every single time.

But I do agree with you about other people doing his songs. The Shrek version (Wainwright) is fantastic! I get that Cohen isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. He was a writer before he was a songwriter & a singer & it shows, ‘cause he wrote stories. I think that is why I will always love him. Give me a storyteller any day of the week.
