Dear J. Westenberg,
I like the concept & have often wondered, as a housefrau — how about a minimal wage for housewives? Say you have a child or two & you are a stay at home mom or dad. Throw them a bone of, what? let’s say the shallow end of the pool, $8.00/hr. I’m not sure what the cut off point is, we don’t exactly work 9–5, but let’s attempt for partial equality, & pay them for 8 of the 24 hours they’re on duty.
Because I, for one, would take it. I’m not too proud. Take out some for tax purposes, etc, but make me feel like a paid/valued member of society. I promise, I won’t ever unionize or strike. Give us a raise once in a while. We’re not asking for an award show. We’re not going to get a retirement watch. Just… SEE us! Recognize us! Give us a prop (if props are too much to ask for). I just feel that people who clean up after elephants in a parade get more from society then do housewives & househusbands.
Well, it’s a nice fantasy.
