You’re right, I know you’re absolutely correct. And I also love the idea of an umbrella topic writing. However, this is my dilemma:
I want to be a fiction writer, mostly mysteries, but every genre, excluding poetry (not touching this one). I started on Medium, & am continuing here for the main & selfish reason of getting better. Keep the hand moving, be accountable (I write two entries per week), become a better writer by writing. I am already a voracious reader. Another selfish reason — I heard that agents don’t even look at you unless you have some internet following, & I have no Facebook, no Twitter, no Instagram, & a 7-year-old computer (called Bessy).
I read others because they follow me, I return the curtesy, I find other blogs interesting, inspirational & / or educational. Plus, I really believe everyone should write to heal, to think, to connect — I’m on a mission to encourage as far as writing responses go. But I digress (as I often do).
I may share some of my fiction writing on Medium, but very little. I do not want to self-publish (read: I will not self-publish). If I never publish by a publishing house, that’s ok. I’m already living my definition of success.
The crux of my dilemma is: how can I possibly have an umbrella? I am not teaching anyone HOW to do anything thing- although I might share a recipe later on. I’m not telling people how to be more productive in the morning, how to drink less, how to eat more. I just have thoughts, ideas, memories, family members I write about. Do you see what I mean? I don’t think anyone needs more lessons on being lazier or how to be better at procrastinating, those subjects have been covered as nauseam. And, honestly, I don’t want a platform. I do always see gallows.
I’ll never make to 1,000 followers, will I? Sigh. Hells bells, I probably won’t even make it half that. That’s ok. If I’m still here 4 1/2 years later, I’ll be a happy camper.
