Dear Kate,

So well said. My mom is fond of saying that as long as you have your parents or parent, you are a child, someone’s child. No matter how old you are when you lose them, you become an orphan — what a chilling word. To become an orphan at age 40 or 50 or 68. It’s almost funny, a grown-ass Oliver Twist, with gray hair & wrinkles, but without a parent. Almost a Saturday Night Live skit.
