Dear Onaopemipo,

I liked your article! It reminded me of a commercial for a Cadillac, a few years ago: you deserve a Cadillac. I found myself nodding my head, until it dawned on me, that no! I didn’t actually do anything in the past week or even month, if not much, much longer to deserve a bicycle, never mind a Cadillac! I didn’t rush into burning buildings to save puppies & babies, I didn’t write a book that changed people’s lives, I didn’t perform heart transplant surgery!

Yes, people’s UNEARNED sense of entitlement is incredible! It also reminded me of one of the last scenes in the movie Unforgiven, with Clint Eastwood, when he is about to kill a corrupt, completely amoral, evil sheriff. And this sheriff is screaming, “I cleaned up this town! I did good things! I don’t deserve this!” And Eastwood squints at him and says in that raspy voice of his, “It ain’t got nothing to do with ‘deserve.’”

That is most people don’t get. That it ain’t got nothing to do with deserve.
