Dear Paige,

I am so sorry you had to go through all that crap. It’s definitely not right, absolutely unfair!

We live in the US, & my husband works for the Mental Health Center of Denver. Its a large non-profit that focuses on reclaiming lives & minds. It’s a tremendous organization, & my husband, although he works in Human Resources, is damn proud of MHCD & the work they do. I wish every city would have some organization like that! The consumers are often homeless, low-income, the forgotten. Anyone can walk into one of many offices & get cheap therapy, as well as help to get a job, housing, everything!

Having a mental illness, anything from depression to schizophrenia, can derail a life as surely as a physical illness, but although we’ve come a long way from lobotomies & electroshock therapy, we still have a long, long ahead. It is by talking about it openly, not like some dirty little secret, do we get ahead! And personally I have yet to meet anyone who’s not suffering from something where therapy &/or drugs would be life-changing!

Thank you for writing such a personal, vulnerable story. I wish you luck, & for all who need help but cannot afford it, we should all be ashamed & try our best to change the status quo!
