Food of the gods.

Have you ever wondered what exactly people meant when they talked about ambrosia, or food of the gods? Because I have, I have spent many, many minutes pondering what gods would have eaten and what they would have found pleasing to their discerning palate, and I think I have come upon the answer.

I believe it would be the best of their own regional cuisine. That is the most logical answer, yes? But of course! Why would a Japanese god send out for tacos when sushi was so readily available and so incredibly fresh? Why would Zeus and Hera forgo succulent lamb-kababs and gyros with ouzo for Vietnamese pho?

I just don’t see the gods of India acquiring the taste for Irish stew, do you? Nor do I imagine Loki and Thor scooping up spicy lentils with Ethiopian injera bread. And I can certainly see Quetzalcoatl slurping a bowl of spicy menudo with the added ingredient of the heart of his enemies, but he would never consider fettuccine alfredo.

Perhaps, just perhaps, when we talk about the many and varied deities and their gastronomical preferences, we shouldn’t cast the net too wide. I am pretty certain that gods wouldn’t have done so.
