Some more small mercies from the pandemic.

I was texting with a friend this morning, and she asked how I’m doing. I told her I had not received my drive-thru COVID test results yet, but I’ve been waking up with migraines too often, and my back is super hurty. On the other hand, I said, it may have to do with my shitty eating habits (like not eating until 2 or 3 in the afternoon) and shitty sleeping habits (like not going to bed until 2 or 3 in the morning). She said that if you can’t have shitty sleeping and eating habits during a goddamn pandemic, what’s it even good for?

I think my friend was trying to say that right now it’s stressful for everyone, and it is hard to maintain normality. My friend was basically saying, be kinder to yourself.

Hear me out — I am not advocating giving up, parking on the couch in dirty sweats, while eating a stick of butter rolled in sugar, washing it down with a cup of vodka and pills. I’m pointing out that if you happen to not have energy today to get in your daily workout or want to take little nap instead, or if you want to eat a cheeseburger instead of a salad, then go for it, because taking it easier on yourself right now is essential. And if you take a wrong turn, remember, you don’t keep on driving. You can turn around, and get back on your way.

By the way, I finally did get my results this evening, as did our son, Sammy. He tested positive, while I tested negative. My general feeling of dodging a bullet lasted about 10 seconds, knowing that I am in the same house with two COVID-positive young adults. And the reality of needing another test later in the week (to double check) set in.

I think I will sleep in a bit late tomorrow. And, also, I think I am going to go to bed a bit earlier today. And I will take it one day at a time.
